Common Transportation Acronyms in the Berkshires

MPO
Metropolitan Planning Organization
The Berkshire MPO consists of the following:
  • Executive Office of Transportation & Construction (EOTC) Secretary
  • Massachusetts Highway Department (MassHighway) Commissioner
  • Berkshire Regional Transportation Authority (BRTA) Chair
  • Berkshire Regional Planning Commission (BRPC) Chair

Each of the following documents is reviewed & adopted by the MPO:

UWP
Unified Work Program

The UWP is the statement of transportation planning tasks to be completed for the year & the budget for them.

TIP
Transportation Improvement Program

The TIP is a multi-year capital program of transportation projects updated each year.

Transportation Plan

A regional Transportation Plan is a guiding document for all federally funded transportation planning efforts, usually with a twenty year horizon and updated every three years.

North - Central Berkshire Access Study

The study will identify transportation access problems in Berkshire County north of the Massachusetts Turnpike and develop alternative solutions that will be economically and environmentally viable.

MIS
Major Investment Study

A MIS is a type of study broadly defined by the federal government when a major road, interchange, or transit facility may be requested by the MPO.

BTF
Berkshire Transportation Forum

The BTF is an open group for public participation by all interested people who live, work, or otherwise care about transportation in the Berkshires.

RSC
Regional Study Committee for the Access Study

The RSC consists of participants from the BTF who are willing to be more closely involved in shaping policy, reviewing details of the study, and considering technical work.

TSC
Technical Steering Committee for the Access Study

The TSC consists of technical staff from the MPO agencies and from local municipalities (if they wish to participate). With the other members of the Technical Team (staff from various regulatory agencies), it makes sure the study efforts are technically sound.
